I can’t blame him, they’re the best three movies ever made, seriously. Anyway, being the person I am, I started teasing hubby about how gay the movies were. Now, I must state that I mean gay as a complement, not a lame high school insult. I love the fact that there’s so much underlying gayness in these movies ’cause otherwise fans wouldn’t write slash fan fiction about the characters. Lord of the Rings was one of the first fandoms I read slash fan fiction in. Thought I’d share my list. Feel free to comment with your own additions. What Makes Lord of the Rings Gay Nine men camping in the wilderness, alone, for days, months at a time. No women. Do I have to go on? Elves with their long, beautifully groomed hair (even after hours of fighting), flowing cloaks, shiny hair pieces and tights - and that’s just the men. Legolas stroking his arrow - and that’s not an euphemism. In The Two Towers just before what remains of the fellowship is approached by Galdalf the White, they all grip their weapons. Legolas caresses his like a lover, a male lover. The One Ring. Seriously, a bunch of men on a journey to destroy an evil weapon and it’s a ring? A shiny, gold ring. I’m just saying. Minthrill. Their version of a bullet proof vest looks an awful lot like shiny lingerie. “My Precious”. All the men are a little too attached to the shiny ring, so attached they gave it a girly pet name. Everyone has long hair - except the hobbits but they all look like they have perms. And everyone seems awfully attached to their pretty, pretty hair. Frodo often refers to Sam as “my Sam” or “Dear Sam”. The Evenstar pendant that Aragorn wears is not at all masculine. I know it’s a sign of love from his girl, but most men wouldn’t wear it, at least most straight men. When Boromir dies, Aragorn kisses him on the forehead. That’s the gesture of a lover or family - he’s not family. When Frodo is about to board the ship to the Gray Heavens, he kisses Sam on the forehead. Again, that’s the gesture of a lover or family and he’s not family. In the beginning of Return of the King, Smeagol calls his male friend, “my luv”. I know they’re supposed to be British, but even British men don’t call their male pals luv. The hug between Aragorn & Haldir in The Two Towers. Aragorn has an odd tone of voice when he says “you are most welcome” as though he’s greeting a long lost lover. That’s just the obvious stuff I can think of right now. I could probably sit down, watch each movie and make a detailed list of every gay moment: every look (especially between Sam and Frodo), every touch, every possible euphemism, but I won’t. I just wanted to share my thoughts. Wonder if I’m the only one that sees these things? I can’t be the only one that feels the sexual tension between those two. Anyone else wanna make that phone call for me?
